Hoaxes Have Negative Influence on Jokowi`s Electability: SMRC

17 March 2019 18:28 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive Director of the Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) Djayadi Hanan said that hoaxes against incumbent presidential candidate Joko Widodo or Jokowi tended to increase the electability chances of his opponent, Prabowo Subianto, in the 2019 Presidential Election. "Hoaxes about Jokowi had a very negative influence on him," said Djayadi at the SMRC Office, Jakarta, Sunday, March 17, 2019.

Although it can reduce Jokowi's chances, Djayadi said that the survey still showed that that Jokowi`s electability rate remained high, at 57.6 percent of the 2,820 respondents interviewed on February 24-March 5 2019. While Prabowo's electability was 31.8 percent. This happened because there were not enough people who believed in the hoax.

The survey methodology used by the SMRC was a multistage random sampling. The respondents who can be interviewed validly are 2,479 or 88 percent, with a margin of error of approximately 2 percent.

As many as 6 percent of respondents believe the hoax of Jokowi is a descendant or a member of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). While those who disagree are 73 percent. The SMRC also noted that the trend of the issue of Jokowi is a PKI member tends to stagnate in the range of 5-6 percent since September 2017.

Another issue, said Djayadi, was that 10 percent of respondents agreed that Jokowi was an accomplice to the Chinese government. While those who did not agree were 69 percent. The trend of the issue in the past year was not too far away, namely the range of 9-10 percent.

In addition, as many as 6 percent of respondents surveyed by the SMRC also believed that Jokowi was anti-Islamic. The trend towards the issue is also stagnant.

According to Djayadi, if hoaxes against Jokowi were believed to be increasingly massive, then Prabowo's chances would be greater to win. "However, so far the trend is still very few who believe in those hoaxes."
